Cutting Costs For Owning a Car

Posted at 6:22 pm under Automotive

If you haven't seen the infamous commercial that was made for Honda some time ago, then I highly recommend it. If you are anything like me, most people think of car commercials as annoying and usually pointless filler in between their favorite movies or television shows. They are a signal to us that it is the perfect opportunity to sneak out to use the bathroom real quick or grab a snack from the kitchen. However, there are a lot of clever car commercials out there, being produced by such clever industry giants such as Honda, that are doing a fantastic job keeping people's attention.

If you remember, there was a really popular Honda commercial in which you don't even know that you are watching a commercial for a car because the way it starts out is with a mechanism that triggers a series of reactions. By the end of the commercial, you see where this series of reactions leads- right up to an attractive minivan that starts up in which we then figure out that it is indeed a car commercial. And if you're still not sure, seconds later after they reveal the minivan, a Honda slogan appears on the screen. In the meantime, you are still sitting there wondering how they got that car started the way that they did.

You know a car commercial is good when, at first, you don't even know what the commercial is advertising-only that you're somehow mesmerized by it. For instance, a lot of people will remember the car commercial for the Mitsubishi Eclipse model that showed the people in the Mitsubishi Eclipse dancing to some techno music. A lot of car commercials seem to be banking their success on music lately. For example, there is a foreign car commercial that is set to the music of the Renault Ballet- quite captivating really. But the bigger question here is, "Does it work?"
Are these clever car commercials actually getting people to buy the vehicles?

It seems like the car commercials are working if people even remember what they were about. Think about it. Whoever is in charge of directing and producing the car commercials that we wind up seeing at home (or any commercial for that matter) only has a very limited amount of time in which to capture that viewer's attention. Lately, one great and easy way to catch someone's attention is by incorporating catchy music into commercials. After all, look at the iPod. This is a company that certainly knows good music! The last time I saw an iPod commercial, it was simply a silhouette of various people dancing with the outline of an iPod in their hands. Now, why didn't I think of something like this before? The people who are really successful with commercials and learn to incorporate music as one of the elements are the ones who are clever because even if you happen to start walking out of the room, the music will get your attention to come back in and see whatever it is on the television.
