Electric car shoppers are already disappointed, who will be next?! The Chevrolet Volt had been receiving press and attention for quite some time, but that didn't seem to stop General Motors from making a botched mess of it. It kept pushing back the release date, and then finally it made the announcement that the Volt wouldn't be an electric car after all, but would be a different type of hybrid where it wouldn't have a gasoline powered engine, but would use gasoline to power an on-board generator to create electricity to power the Volt's electric motors.

For GM, Battery Assembly Will Be Handled In House

General Motors has announced that production of its lithium-ion battery packs will be accomplished at a company owned facility to be located and built in Michigan this year.

For General Motors, one of the largest automobile manufacturers in the world, one of the most significant technologies that will help shape the company’s future are lithium-ion batteries. These batteries are the centerpiece of its Chevrolet Volt design, an electric car that will run on pure grid energy for forty miles before a gas powered engine kicks in to extend its range.
